Events and Activities
With so many activities to get involved in, UC is the perfect place to meet people and give something new a go!
From sports to arts to music, life at college is all about creating fun and lasting memories; balancing your social life with your studies. With a variety of events on offer throughout the year, you can get involved in a little or a lot, but no matter what your interests, there’s something for everyone.
Our Student Club and staff work together to build a fun-filled calendar of events that will make your time at UC a memorable and exciting one.
Welcome Saturday
Welcome Saturday is our move-in day! Orientation Week Leaders (OWLs) help you move into your new home and run activities so you can start making friends right away. This is just the beginning of Orientation Week, a week filled with exciting events designed to introduce you to college, university, and the vibrant city of Melbourne. Activities include everything from scavenger hunts to silent discos!
Social Events
Social activities are never in short supply at UC, so it’s practically impossible not to make friends at college. We try to implement a variety of events that cater to the diversity of people at UC. While the exact events may vary a little year on year, there are some key events that are held annually. These include the UC Ball (a perfect excuse to put on your finest outfit), internal UC parties (known as Terns) and the UC Boat Cruise. Other smaller events include trivia nights, movie nights, picnics and more.
Intercollegiate Sports
Whether you’re an expert, or trying it for the first time, we have a variety of sports you can participate in and compete against the other UniMelb colleges. Even if sport isn’t your thing, UCers are known for showing up in big numbers to support our teams!
There are heaps of sports on offer each year including cricket, netball, basketball, tennis, footy and hockey. Three big intercollegiate carnivals also take place annually, including the athletics carnival (featuring the infamous mascot race), swimming carnival and rowing day.
Drama, Music and Art
As we accept students from other universities, a lot of UCers are studying artistic subjects. With dedicated spaces for music and design, there’s room for you to practise and try something new.
Each year we offer students an opportunity to showcase their creative talents during our Art, Music and Design Week, with prizes on offer for the winners in each category. Students can also showcase their talents via musical soirees and the more casual Pleasant Friday Afternoon events. There is also an annual UC musical, offering plenty of opportunities to get involved on stage or back of house.
The UniMelb colleges also take part in intercollegiate music and art events throughout the year. Highlights include the Lip Sync Battle, Step-Up Dance Competition, Battle of the Bands and the intercollegiate theatre production. So there are always plenty of chances to meet students from other colleges outside of UC.
Welcome Saturday
Formal Dinners
At the start and end of each college year, we hold a big formal dinner to welcome and farewell our students. The Valedictory Dinner at the end of the year is also an opportunity to recognise those students who have shown outstanding leadership during their time with us. Every Monday evening we also hold High Table, a formal dinner where we gather the community together for dinner. It is quite an honour to be asked to sit on the high table, which is designed to acknowledge those who have assisted the college in various ways. We also invite guest speakers from the universities to speak at some of these events, and make any important announcements.
Wellbeing Events
Led by the Dean of Students, Student Wellbeing Coordinator, and the Student Wellbeing Committee, UC runs a series of yearly events and initiatives focused on student wellbeing. Each year the UC community has their own special interests and needs which help to determine the events that take place, however general themes tend to be around building connections, being community minded, and imparting knowledge and skills to empower students to look after their own wellbeing. Wellbeing Week in Semester 1 and Spirit Week in Semester 2 are two yearly events that shine a spotlight on wellbeing skill development and performing random acts of kindness to build connection and community.
Student Leadership
Our Student Club organises many events for the student body and works to ensure all residents have the best college experience possible. The executive team is elected by the student body each year and includes a variety of positions, including President and Vice President, Treasurer, and representatives for sport, music, wellbeing, social events and international students.
You can also put your hand up to be on a general committee based on your interests, such as community service, photography or sustainability.
